On 20th April at 03.25am, East Sussex Fire & Rescue Service received the first of five emergency calls regarding a fire in a caravan at Deanland Wood Caravan Park, Chiddingly.
Two fire engines were immediately dispatched from Hailsham and Herstmonceux. Crews arrived to find smoke issuing from the caravan, which was well alight.
Firefighters used two breathing apparatus, one hose reel jet and foam to tackle the blaze and performed search and rescue.
Tragically, it was confirmed that one male casualty had died at the scene.
Mark Matthews, Wealden Borough Commander, said: “This is a really tragic incident and our thoughts are with the family and friends of the gentleman who died. The cause of the fire is currently being investigated by a Fire Investigation Officer and a Scenes of Crime Officer from Sussex Police.”
