Two barn fires in one day prompts safety warning for farmers

East Sussex Fire and Rescue Service is calling on farmers to check their safety measures following two barn fires in one day.

We were called by West Sussex Fire and Rescue Service at 18.56 last night (12 November) to a barn which had caught alight in Brambletye Lane in Forest Row.

It was reported that a diesel tank had exploded and there were crops, vehicles, cylinders and chemicals in the barn.

Crews used ground monitors and main jets to pump water and foam at the building.

Water carriers and seven fire engines were sent from East Sussex, including firefighters and officers from Forest Row, Uckfield, Crowborough, Heathfield, Newhaven and Lewes.

West Sussex Fire and Rescue sent crews from East Grinstead and Haywards Heath.

Environment Agency was informed due to the fuel spill.

It follows a barn fire earlier in the day (03.48) on Battle Road in Dallington.

Firefighters used breathing apparatus, hose reels and 1-in-7 foam to tackle the blaze, involving 100 tonnes of straw.

Safety advice for farmers
Farmers are required by law, under the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005, to carry out a fire risk assessment of their farm buildings.

Are you up to date with the requirements of current fire safety legislation? In particular to need to:

  • Have a suitable and sufficient fire risk assessment, which has identified sources of ignition and fuel and have eliminated, reduced, isolated, and controlled them as far as is reasonably practical.
  • Produced an emergency plan.
  • Ensured that employees know about the risks present in the workplace.
  • Ensured that they know what to do in the event of an emergency.
  • Maintained the premises and any fire related facilities, equipment and devices.
